It started the way most of these stories start: with a ruined week.
My starter went down early in the second quarter. Not a season-ending injury — just done for the day. My bench player who would've filled in? He was sitting right there, healthy, ready, watching from my bench the entire game. But the platform I was using didn't care. My score for that slot was locked the second the injury happened, and there was nothing I could do about it. One bad break, and my whole week was decided before halftime.
I remember thinking: this is dumb. Not "unlucky." Dumb. The information existed. The solution was obvious. My backup was right there. And yet every major platform I'd ever played on just... accepted it. Shrugged. "That's fantasy football."
I don't think it has to be.
Yahoo, ESPN, and Sleeper are the platforms most of us grew up playing on, and to be fair, they got a lot right early on. But somewhere along the way, they stopped asking hard questions about their own defaults. The injury rule I described above? Still standard, everywhere, all these years later. Schedules that are still generated by pure random chance before a single snap has been played, even though the tools to do better have existed for years. Locked into the platform you started on, with real friction if you ever want to bring your league somewhere else.
None of that is malicious. It's just what happens when a product gets big enough that "good enough" stops getting revisited. I don't think anyone at those companies wakes up thinking about how to make Week 1 fairer. I think about that constantly, because it's the actual reason this exists.
EvergreenFantasyFootball started as one feature — Next Man Up, the fix for that ruined week I described above — and grew from there. True Schedule came from the same instinct: why is your schedule still decided before the draft even happens, when we could easily build it afterward, once we actually know how strong each team is? Transfer Portal and Two-Minute Drill came from watching how much friction exists just in switching platforms or joining a league that's already underway.
I'm building this myself, around a full-time job, one real feature at a time. No investors telling me what has to ship by Q3. No committee deciding an injury rule from 1997 isn't worth revisiting. Just an honest, public build — you can watch the actual progress on the homepage right now.
I'll say it plainly: that's the goal. Not because I think they're bad companies, but because I think fantasy football players deserve a platform that's still asking "why does it have to work this way?" — and I don't think the big three are asking that question anymore. I think I can build something better, and I'm betting a lot of my own time on it.
